Except summer,any time of the year is suitable for visiting Sandhan Valley.It gets hot and humid,and enduring the heat drains your energy,making the trek less enjoyable.Sandhan Valley treks are especially memorable and enjoyable in winter, autumn and even the monsoon season.
HOW TO GET THERE AND WHERE TO GO:-
To reach Samrad village,you must first go to Kasara or Igatpuri. Road: Hire a car and drive to Samrad village. The distance between Mumbai and Sandhan Ghati is around 200 kms,which takes 4 to 5 hours to travel. Alternatively,you can take a state transport bus from Mumbai or Pune to Igatpuri-Ghoti,from where buses to Bhandardara are available,and then take a shared jeep to Samrad village.
Take a train from Mumbai to Kasara. Take Kasara fast train from CST.Arrive at Kasara and reserve a shared jeep for Samrad. There are many shared jeep rides available.You can also take a long distance train to your destination.
ROUTE FOR TREKKING:-
Start your trek at Samrad and you will pass through shallow water bodies 2 to 4 feet deep within the first few hours. On the way down,you’ll come across the Tarzan swing point, where you’ll walk and use a rope ladder before doing some cave crawling.You will then descend and rise through the rock patch. There will be deep water pools to get into, wide rocks to climb up and then a campsite.Bun Pinnacle and Ajoba Hill will be visible from your vantage point.
Continue descending through the gentle slopes from the pond and take a riverside trek to Dehne village,where buses are available to Asangaon station.Alternatively,come back to Samrad via the same route and catch a shared jeep to your destination,or stay at Bhandardara for a longer vacation.
The journey cost for a self drive car from Mumbai to Bhandardara (round trip) ranges from Rs 5000 to Rs 8000.Train ticket price will range from Rs.1000 to Rs.1200.(return fare).The cost of a shared jeep is Rs 50 per person.The price of bus tickets from Mumbai to Bhandardara will be between Rs.600 and Rs.800.Overnight camping is available at the Gorge Camp in your own tent.The cost of one night’s stay in Samrad village is Rs.500 and Rs. 800. There will be no food on the way as it is a shady ravine trek with no settlements around. But a lot of homemade food is served by the locals of Samrad village, who cook fresh and hot Marathi dishes including bhakri,poha,upma,bhaji,dal and rice. Have a healthy and complete breakfast before starting the trek, take food with you for the night and on landing, have a nice lunch at Dehne or Samrad. If you travel in a group trek,the trek operator will provide the food.
SAFETY AND TRAVEL ADVICE:-
First time trekkers should not attempt this trek without the help of a guide or trekking company.Your endurance will be tested on this trek. Stay away if you have a medical condition,a weak heart,or high blood pressure.Bring along some energy bars,insect repellent and a windbreaker.Pack light and use a comfortable backpack Bring enough water from the village of cultivation.The water from the trails can be unsafe to drink.There are no restrooms on the trail unless the trek operator has installed a porta potty.
