The summer months are challenging for construction site workers as they are prone to harsh weather conditions. Their job is strenuous, and they must protect themselves from heart-related complications, especially when working with high-rise projects. The humidity and the heat make them prone to dehydration and heat strokes if they are not careful.

According to him, the following are some salient tips construction workers should follow while working on the site during summers-
- Hydrate– Workers must drink plain cool water or coconut water every 15-20 minutes, and they can also drink sports drinks to replenish the lost electrolytes in the body. Fresh juices and fruits should be consumed regularly. The beverages to avoid while working on the construction site during summer are coffee, alcohol, sodas, and tea. They are diuretic in nature and cause dehydration. Some symptoms of dehydration are weakness, reduced urination, dizziness, dry mouth, thirst, the inability to sweat, and an inflamed tongue. As a worker, if you experience any or more of the above symptoms, immediately drink water, and take a break.
- Get acclimatized– This tip helps new construction workers or those that have joined the site after a vacation. It would help if you got acclimatized to the weather and location. Start by doing 50% of your work, and gradually go up to 100% in five to seven days. This step helps your body adjust safely to the workload and heat.
- Dress appropriately– Wear light fabrics that help absorb sweat and not trap body heat. Cotton works well for the hot summer months. You can also choose moisture-wicking clothes that keep your effort off the body.
- Start early in the day– The heat reaches its peak during the afternoon, so start your work early in the day before the hottest hours set in.
- Take breaks in the shade– If you are feeling the stress of the heat, take a break, and go into the shade. This is the best time for you to drink fluids and hydrate. Rest for some time and resume work.
According to Kanat Sultanbekov, you should ensure your body is comfortable, so always keep a wet cloth handy to wipe your face and body. The body has specific pulse points to make you cool: your neck, elbows, and wrists. The top of your feet and the inside of your ankles are pulse points in the lower body. You can soak your feet in a bucket of water for some minutes to cool down. Lastly, be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion, heat stroke, heat rashes, and heat cramps to avoid them. Prevention is always better than a cure, so immediately take a break if you feel uncomfortable on the site, hydrate, and rest till you are better to get back to work.
